One of the overall objectives of INPLAMINT is to derive suitable management options for optimizing nutrient-use efficiency in agricultural biomass production. Together with subproject E, subproject D is performing accompanying research, aiming at a screening assessment of these management options in terms of their impacts on sustainability. Within the work package on sustainability assessment, IFEU is mainly responsible for the environmental assessment of the management options, while HfWU mainly covers socio-economic aspects. Recommendations to stakeholders will be jointly derived.
Subproject D is subdivided into the following three tasks:

  1. Definition of management options
    The results from the work packages performing basic research are reviewed and distinct management options to improve the regeneration of nutrients and nutrients with specific benefits and impacts are defined. The management options will at least cover the techniques tested by UKiel by means of field trials. A preliminary set of management options will be discussed and developed with stakeholders in a workshop. In addition, reference scenarios are being developed that map alternative uses of the substrates (straw, biochar, etc.) as well as various future development paths of agriculture.

  2. Environmental assessment
    The impacts on environment are assessed by means of established and reliable as well as innovative methods. This mainly includes:

    a) Life cycle assessment (LCA)
    A screening life cycle assessment will be conducted with special emphasis put on the environmental impact categories capturing N emissions and C dynamics.

    b) Life cycle environmental impact assessment (LC-EIA)
    This method borrows elements from environmental impact assessment (EIA) but follows the principle of life cycle thinking. It is specifically useful for the assessment of local and site-specific environmental impacts associated with the proposed management options for increased nutrient-use efficiency in INPLAMINT.

  3. Recommendations for farmers and policy makers
    Based on the results of the previous tasks in this subproject as well as in subproject E, recommendations for farmers and policy makers are derived. Preliminary recommendations are discussed with stakeholders in a final conference and revised according to their feedback.
